It was quite the build-up.
Veteran announcer Bob Tallman did his best to give local cowboy Beau Hill the proper sendoff before the chute opened during the final performance of the Northwest Montana Fair PRCA Rodeo Saturday night at the Flathead County Fairgrounds.
"Here is Northwest Montana's hero, Mr. Beau Hill," Tallman's gritty voice blared over the speakers.
"Let's ride."
And Hill did just that with a packed house cheering their favorite cowboy on.
The West Glacier bull rider did not disappoint as he squeezed out every point possible on a bull called U Turn for a 79-point second go and a third-place check at the pay window. His announced score drew plenty of boos from the partial audience, which was hoping for a higher mark.
"I get more nervous riding here than the NFR," Hill said.
"Lots of friends and family here. They all come out to watch me. I put extra pressure on myself (at this rodeo)."
Hill, who is enjoying another successful year on the PBR circuit, was competing at the fair rodeo for the first time in several years.
He's also carrying a PRCA card for the first time since "2004 or 2005."
"That was a real good bull," Hill said.
"Kesler's a first class operation. They put on a good rodeo.
"Never saw that bull before," Hill said of U Turn.
"It was new for me ... a real solid bull."
Hill, who has competed twice in both the NFR and PBR finals, also pocketed some cash on Wednesday in Helena at a PBR event. He finished third in a round and fifth overall.
Winning the bull riding was Tyler Dellen of Helena. He posted an 82 on Real Deal on the final night.
