They’re easy to spot – Doug Raymer with his dark red mane and Zach Perrin with his stark blonde surfer look.
On Saturday they cultivated some mutual admiration and made major hay under the sun at the Missoula County Public Schools Invitational track and field meet at Missoula County Stadium.
Kalispell Flathead’s Perrin brought out the best in Darby’s Raymer, who won the boys’ 800-meter run with a meet-record time of one minute, 54.62 seconds. An hour later, Perrin turned in the best time in the state to date in the 1,600, winning in 4:24.36.
Raymer, a quadruple winner at the 2011 State B track meet and a University of Montana track recruit, gave Perrin a good deal of credit for helping him set Saturday’s only meet record.
“Zach took it out from the get-go and he just, I was just toast in the first 400,” Raymer said. “Then coming around the corner when I was trying to pass him, he was putting up a fight and then kind of backed off because he knew he had to run the 1,600. He could have had it. He’s got a good kick. It’s hard to say. He’s a really talented runner.”
Perrin, every bit as humble as Raymer, saw the 800 a little differently.
“Doug sure took it,” he said. “I came in that last lap and I was just thinking he was going to chill for 200 yards, then kick it right there. He started sprinting. I was like, ‘Ooo, I could try and go with him and kill myself, and most likely not win because I could see in his eyes he wanted it.’ So I decided I’ll save it a little bit for the mile.”
Not only did Perrin win the 1,600, he ran a leg on the winning 400 relay team, helping the Braves seal a team title. Flathead finished with 91 points, 6.5 better than runner up Missoula Big Sky.
“I had some kids that really stepped up and competed,” Flathead veteran coach Dan Hodge said. “We shuffled some things around. I still have some kids missing. I’m happy the way they performed.
“(Perrin) is a quality runner, we know that. He made a big difference in that (400) relay. He ran a 50.75 split. He took us from fourth right up even with the lead. Then our last runner (Michael Managhan) just had to run and he ran his normal.”
The Big Sky boys were led by Weston Northrop, who won the triple jump with a mark of 46 feet, one-half inch. The best individual showing by a Missoula boy was turned in by Sentinel junior sprinter Jake Messerly, who won the 100 in 11.47 and 200 in 22.42.
“My (200) time was a lot better than state last year, so I was pretty excited about it,” said Messerly, who finished second in the event at the 2011 State AA meet.
Stephen Delaney of Charlo was also a double winner individually. He claimed gold in the 110 hurdles in 15.09 and in the 300 hurdles in 39.80.

Corvallis earned the girls’ team bragging rights. It piled up 108 points, seven more than runnerup Big Sky.
Sadi Henderson led the charge for Corvallis. She won the 200 in 26.28 and took second in the 400 in 58.65.
“There wasn’t a lot that went wrong for us today,” Corvallis coach Spencer Huls said. “We had two girls (Carlie Jessop and Courtney Albright) that met our qualifying standards for the discus, which was really nice. Both were PRs.
“Our depth just makes it easier for us. We placed in the triple jump, high jump, both hurdles, 200, 400, 800, 1,600, 3,200, both relays, the discus and the shot. When we have that type of event coverage it makes me smile.”
Hellgate’s Paige Gilchrist and Sentinel’s Liz Harper had a big day individually. Gilchrist won the 1,600 in 5:16.40 and the 3,200 in 11:19.57. Harper took top honors in the 100 hurdles in 14.92 and 300 hurdles in 45.41.
Flathead’s Tess Brenneman also had two individual golds. She won the 400 in 58.12 and the long jump at 17-8.
Charlo’s Dawn Blevins had a day to remember in the javelin. She uncorked a throw of 128-7, which was more than 13 feet better than second-place Britney Chilcott of Stevensville.
“I thought conditions were perfect today,” she said of the windy but warm weather.
