Champs repeat all-around crowns at prep finals rodeo
By the Missoulian BOZEMAN - Helena cowboy Ty Erickson and Jackson cowgirl Brooke Hirschy won all-around titles for a second straight year at the Montana High School Finals Rodeo that finished up here Sunday at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds.
Erickson took second in steer wrestling during Sunday's short go-round, which capped off the five-day rodeo. Erickson, a senior, was first in the year-end standings, though, and finished with 741 points en route to the all-around title.
Corvallis junior Duston Stephens finished second in the all-around chase with 592 points. Hirschy and Philipsburg junior Elly Hogue tied for the state title in barrel racing. Each rider turned in a time of 17.74 seconds as they did some turnin' and burnin' in Sunday's short-go.
Hirschy, also a junior, collected 1,076.5 points to win the girls' all-around title over her older sister Murphy (833).
Both Erickson and Brooke Hirschy won the all-around awards last year when the MHSRA held its season-ending rodeo in Missoula.
Other noteable state champs include Columbia Falls junior Matt Triplett, who won the bull riding title and year-end title for a second straight year.
Triplett was one of two riders to stay on their bull in Sunday's short-go. He scored an 85 to win the event.
Missoula's Mariah Rys-Sikora won a year-end title in pole bending as did Stevensville senior Mariah Morgan in barrel racing.
Rys-Sikora, a senior, was also third in the all-around scoring.
Also scoring repeat state titles were Great Falls' Clay Gruel (saddle bronc) and Harlowton's CaDee Tew (breakaway roping).
Tew, the reigning national champion in breakaway, didn't finish first in the year-end tally, but did place second and will get to defend her crown.
The top four year-end finishers in each event qualify for the National High School Finals Rodeo July 19-25 at Farmington, N.M.
Other top finishers may qualify to attend the Silver State Invitational Rodeo July 4-9 at Fallon, Nev.
