Home » General NewsHigh School NotebookMay 5, 2011 Central SASII was saddened to read an email from Vernon Walworth of Hoke County about the hard times that the N.C. High School Athletic Association's Student-Athlete Summer Institute has fallen on. The SASI for this area has been held for years at UNC-Pembroke. The program brings in high school athletes from Cape Fear region schools to get training in leadership development, role modeling, mentoring, sportsmanship and prevention training on alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Surveys have shown that athletes who took part in SASI went back to their schools better equipped to take a stand against drug and alcohol use, maintained an GPA of 3.0 or better and showed a drop in referrals for discipline. Walworth reports that last year only five schools in the region sent a total of 18 athletes to the SASI at UNCP. Of those five schools, three were from Cumberland County - South View, Pine Forest and Douglas Byrd. This is a project worth promoting, and every school in this region needs to send one or more of its athletes to SASI this summer. Call your local school and speak to the athletic director or principal. Find out if they are supportive of SASI and see if anything is being done to send students. This is for kids and about kids and it's something that should be taken advantage of immediately.
