Frankamp leads USA to U17 gold medal

   Wichita North senior-to-be Conner Frankamp helped lead the United States to an undefeated 8-0 record and gold medal in the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championships, which wrapped up play Sunday in Kaunas, Lithuania.

   The 6-foot-1 Frankamp scored 22 points in the championship game - a 95-62 victory over Australia - and averaged a team-leading 14,1 points per game in the 10-day tournament.

   The Americans averaged 100 points a game in the tournament, defeating Australia in pool play (89-67) and also in the finals (95-62).  The also defeated the Czech Republic (95-57), Egypt (111-73), France (86-50) and China (116-47) in pool play before downing Canada (113-59) in the quarterfinals and Spain (95-66) in the semifinals.

   Frankamp, who has committed to the University of Kansas, had scoring games if 13, 11, 18, 12, 17, 7, 13 and 22 points in the toiurnament.  He also averaged 2.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game, shot 45 percent from the 3-point arch and made all 11 of his free throws.

   This was Frankamp’s second straight summer playing with the USA U17 team. He averaged 35 points last season as a junior for North and led the Redskins to the Class 6A state tournament. Frankamp is ranked as the nation’s No. 28 recruit according to Rivals.com.
