Brownsburg's Stephanie Mavunga has been named the 2011-12 Gatorade Indiana Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

A 6-foot-3 forward, Mavunga helped lead her team to a top-five ranking in Class 4A, a Hendricks County championship and an 18-3 record.

As a junior, she averaged 21.6 points, 12.4 rebounds, 5.1 blocks, 2.4 steals and 1.5 assists per game. In her career, she has scored 1,188 points.

A member of the USA Basketball U16 National Team that won the gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championship last summer, Mavunga was named All-State as a sophomore.

The 27th annual award presented by Gatorade in collaboration with ESPNHS honors not only athletic excellence but also high standards of academic achivement and exemplary character.

Mavunga, a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award, has maintained a 3.48 GPA and is the vice president of the Brownsburg High House of Representatives. She volunteers locally as a church aide and with Family Career and Community Leaders of America.

Mavunga is the first Gatorade Indiana Girls Basketball Player of the Year chosen from Brownsburg High School.

She joins an elite list of recent Gatorade Indiana Girls Basketball Players of the Year, which include: Bria Goss (2010-11) of Ben Davis, Courtney Moses (2009-10) of Oak Hill, Skylar Diggins (2008-09, 2007-08) of Washington, Ta'Shia Phillips (2006-07) of Brebeuf Jesuit, Janese Banks (2003-04) of Ben Davis, and Katie Geralds (2002-03) of Beech Grove.
