Seven participants, including one individual state champion from a year ago, return for the 75th Annual IHSAA Boys Swimming & Diving State Finals this weekend at the Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Eighty-one schools will wear their colors in this year’s meet including two-time defending state champion Carmel.

Nathan Hopkins of Westfield is the lone returning individual champ from 2011 having won the 500 freestyle. He enters the weekend with the state’s top time in sectionals at 4:37.83.

Junior Jon Astashinsky of Carmel has been a part of the Greyhounds last two winning 400 freestyle relays and has more blue ribbon medals than anyone else in this year’s field.

Preliminary swimming heats get underway Friday night at 6 pm ET / 5 pm CT. The top 16 in each event will return for competition on Saturday with the top eight individuals vying for state championship honors. Those finishing ninth through 16th on Friday will make up the competitors in the consolation heats. All diving will take place on Saturday beginning at 9 am ET / 8 am CT with the top 20 of 32 competitors advancing from the prelims to the semis after five dives each. After three dives each in the semis, the top 16 will advance to the final round for another three dives each.
