Quiz Bowl Faces Off Against Macon

February 17, 2012
By Ryan Kennedy of Centralia High School

On Thursday, February 16, 2012, the Centralia Quiz Bowl teams traveled to Macon for a pair of pivotal CCC games.

The Junior Varsity teams started the evening, but did so slowly. The Panthers took a 20-10 lead into the second quarter, and a late surge gave them a 60-30 margin at the half. Subbing in three new players, the Panthers had a solid third quarter to take a 100-50 lead into the final stanza. Macon did its best to claw their way back into it, but Centralia came out victorious, 110-80. The Panthers have been led in scoring by three different players in the past three weeks, this time by Kim Grimes who had four toss-ups.

Up next was the varsity competition. Two teams, undefeated in this young CCC season, facing off in a re-match of the CCC tournament championship, a game the Panthers won in convincing fashion.

Macon seemed primed for revenge, as the Panthers found themselves on the bad end of a 20-60 start.  Centralia was not deterred, and rallied to lead 70-60 at the end of one period.  The two teams traded shots in the second, but it looked like the Panthers were going to start pulling away as they led 180-110 late in the half. Macon, however, ended the half on a 60-0 run to pull within 10.

Call that championship game a fluke, as these evenly matched teams remained neck and neck through the third, with Centralia clinging to a small lead, 240-220, as the final period began.  A 40-point lead was once again 20, until the Panthers found their stride on question 47 of 50 and went on a 90-10 run to end the game and take the victory. Chelsea led the team with 16 toss-ups, and Charlie was next with three.

At 4-0 in CCC regular season play, the Varsity sits alone atop the conference, while the JV is tied with Palmyra and Clark County for first place. The teams play again on March 1st, as they travel to take on Brookfield.
