Quiz Bowl Hosts South Shelby
February 3, 2012By Ryan Kennedy of Centralia High School
When the South Shelby Cardinals roll in to town, things get tense. Centralia and South Shelby have finished first and second in the conference each of the last four seasons, with Centralia winning the last three CCC titles. Even with this match-up coming so early in the season, its importance was clear.
The action got underway with the junior varsity squads. There wasn’t much scoring in the first, but Centralia took a 30-20 lead into the second period, where they opened things up. Brooke, Rachel, and Kim each answered toss-ups, and captain Will on the bonuses put the JV up 140-70. Bella got her first regular season toss-up as the JV cruised to win 220-110. Brooke and Kim were the match’s top-scorers, with six and five, respectively.
The varsity was on high alert, knowing that the Cardinals would be looking for revenge after the Panthers topped South Shelby 380-300 at the CCC tournament only days before. This one had the looks of another classic, as Centralia needed the last question of the first quarter to tie things at 70-70. South jumped out to a 100-80 lead in the second, but Centralia found their stride, outscoring the Cardinals 170-30 over the last eight questions to take a 250-130 lead into the half.
Speed checks in the first and third had been where the Cardinals were showing their best stuff, but the Panthers refused to let them back into the game. Chelsea, Donna, and Quinton combined for nine toss-ups in the quarter, compared to South Shelby’s three. A solid final stanza declared the Panthers victorious, 460-240. Chelsea’s 18 toss-ups were a game high, edging out South Shelby’s Dustin Bird who had 14. Donna added five toss-ups and Quinton chipped in with three.
The Panther squads, each at 2-0 in CCC play, host Highland on Thursday, February 9th at 4:30.
