The H-Town Select Hoop Report

May 11, 2011
By Matt Malatesta of VYPE MAGAZINE - Central Houston

The Select Hoop Scoop

All the buzz is around the Houston Defenders Select organization. Their 15-Under team travelled to Italy to play in the World National Championships. The Class of 2014 squad won the event at seventh and eighth graders. Leading the team are St. John's guard Justice Winslow and post Khadeem Lattin, who recently transferred to Westbury Christian.

The 17-Under Houston Defenders Select team is tops in Houston and the top five in the country. They are led by Aaron and Andrew Harrison and Terry's Derrick Griffin. Their wild card is St. Thomas' Christian Sanders, who has recently been offered by Texas A&M, Stanford, Harvard and Colorado.

"Sanders has been the hot story for them," RCS Sports' Jim Hicks said. "He's absolutely on fire right now."

In other news, Marland Lowe, formerly of the Houston Hoops, has launched his new team the "Texas Pro." The team has gotten off to a fast start at the 17-Under level with the help of headliner Danuel House of Hightower and T.J. Rhodes and Danrad Knowles of HCYA. Lowe also serves as the assistant basketball coach at Second Baptist High School.

"I've been doing this for 14 years and know how to get kids to play at a high level," he said. "We get them showcased and they trust me."
