Varsity Football to Travel to Naples, FL
March 31, 2013Centerville High School
The 2013 Centerville Football team will get to experience something that no other team in history has experienced. The Elks will get to travel out of Ohio to play a football game on Friday September 27th verses Naples High School in Naples, FL. This trip is being completely funded through private donations and will not cost the District any money. Actually, there is a cost savings since we will not be transporting the team to Greenville. This week 5 opening was a result of Greenville and Centerville both agreeing to opt out of their 2013 week 5 contest. Greenville will play Western Brown, and the Elks agreed to schedule another opponent.
After agreeing to find another opponent for week 5, it became obvious that the Elks were going to struggle in this area. Originally the plan was to host Cleveland St. Ignatius, but that would have given them 7 away games. As scheduling another game for week 5 continued to be a problem we discussed the idea of bringing a team from Canada to play or maybe going back to Greenville and asking them to follow the original schedule and play the game. While this discussion was going on a group of parents approached the Athletic Department with the idea of traveling to Florida. When Naples High School agreed that they would play the game, we next checked with the OHSAA, District Leadership and the Board of Education.
It is important to note that even though our players are going to continue to do all the normal fundraising that they have done in the past, the players WILL NOT fundraise for this trip. An independent parent group is in charge of securing the funds for this trip and they will do so through private donations as well as organizing some fundraising events that will not involve the players. They will fund the flight, food, and lodging for all players, coaches, cheerleaders, trainers, and other support personnel that travel to Naples, FL. Naples High School is then providing transportation for the team free of charge once we touch down at the Fort Meyers Airport. ESPNU has also expressed interest in televising this game nationally. Final details will not be known until late May or early June and will be shared at that time. Because there is no school on Friday, September 27th (in-service day), the team will fly out on Thursday night, stay 2 nights in Naples, return home and be in class on Monday September 30ththerefore missing no class time.
Tickets for the game will be $5 and can be purchased only at the game or early at the Athletic Office at Naples High School beginning Monday September 23rd. These tickets are general admission tickets and do not guarantee a seat. Naples High School has a top ranked programs so, it is suggested that you be in line by 5:30 when the gates open. Even though the stadium seats 4,000, they have had crowds in excess of 8,000 in the stadium. For our parents and supporters there is a great deal being offered by the Gulf Coast Inn which is a resort nearNaples High School. This special offer includes lodging, $160 for two nights and also includes a dinner at a five-star restaurant. Please call 1-239-261-6046 if you would like to reserve a room.
This is an incredible opportunity and experience for our football program, and it comes at no expense to the District. We can be assured that the Elks will represent CHS, our community, the GWOC, and Ohio football with the utmost class. Should you have any questions or you are interested in joining the group funding this trip please call the Athletic Office at 439-3517.
