iHigh visits Center High School

January 22, 2010
By Brad Sweeten of Center High School

The conversation started out something like this, "David there is no way I can live stream more than one mat at our wrestling tournament." After a short pause I said, "Unless you are coming to Kansas City to make this happen." If I could have seen through the phone I believe there was a smile spreading across the face of David Kravetz as his mind went into motion.

The next day David was providing me a list of equipment necessary to live broadcast not one or two mats but six mats at the same time. I spent a busy week gathering equipment, talking to our technology department and trying to calm my own nerves.

Even when David was on the road from Lexington, KY we were visiting on the phone about what was about to take place. People on both ends told us it couldn't be done. Some said it had never been done by a high school before. Those pessimists couldn't stop David from attempting the impossible. David pulled into Center High School's parking lot on Saturday morning January 16 and proceeded to set cameras in place, go on line with laptops, train cameramen, calm my nerves and set up a control table...all within two hours. At 9:00am four cameras were live streaming Center Wrestling onto the internet. David proceeded to fix a couple of minor glitches and at 9:15 all six cameras were in operation. David spent the rest of the day entering data, monitoring cameras, and troubleshooting other schools on their iHigh sites.

Did people watch over the internet? We had viewers from the car dealership ½ mile from school to a dad watching his son from Iraq...and many, many in between! Check out Center's January hit total, we are over 50,000!

There were other important people involved in this endeavor...high fives go out to...
