On Saturday September 28th, the Center High School Lady Yellowjackets volleyball team traveled to Central High School at 3221 Indiana to compete in the Intrascholastic League Spikefest tournament, which pits mostly urban schools from Kansas City and nearby suburbs against each other.
The tournament was structured as 4 four-team pools followed by bracket competition based on pool results.
The Lady Jackets' opponents in the Rita Mabin pool were Hogan Prep, Northeast and Cristo Rey. The girls played some of their best volleyball of the season, defeating Hogan Prep by scores of 25-22 and 25-20, defeating Northeast by scores of 25-20 and 25-22, and defeating Cristo Rey by scores of 25-21 and 25-21 .
It was then on to the championship bracket against East, Ruskin and arch-rival University Academy.
The Lady Jackets took it on the chin against UA in the first game 16-25 then rallied back against adversity to win the remaining two games by scores of 25-4 and 25-14 . The 25-4 score was the most crushing defeat dealt by the Lady Jackets in at least the last 6 seasons of Yellowjacket volleyball.
Ruskin defeated East then faced Center in the deciding set of the championship bracket.
The Lady Jackets prevailed 29-27 in the first game, were denied victory in the second game 18-25 then pushed through in a thrilling 25-23 game to win the championship.
