RUNNIN' WOMEN WIN THE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP...
for the 3rd year in a row and 24th time in WBL history!
Friday, May 16 was the final day of the 2014 Western Buckeye League Track & Field Championship. After Thursday's first day of competition the Ladies held a slight 2 point lead over rival and top challenger Ottawa-Glandorf. The Girls Day 1 points came from the 5th place 4 x 800 relay, runner-up discus placing of Autumn Brehm, and championship effort of Alyssa Hoyng in the high jump. With strong events at the beginning of Friday's schedule, Celina needed a good start to seperate itself from OG. A great start is what the Gals produced. After the first four events CHS scored 40 points, to OG's 6. With a 36 point margin to work with, the Runnin' Women completed the Championship Meet with a 'Championship' Title. The WIN was the Girls' 3rd in a row and 24th 'all time'. Ottawa-Gladorf made a valient charge, only to end up 10 points short. Celina's winning total was 100 to the runner-up 90.
Leading the way was the performance of Bekah Carr. Bekah Jean WON all 4 of her individual events, taking the pole vault, long jump, 100 hurdles, and 300 hurdles. Her partner in three of those events, Emily Jackson, scored big as she tied for 3rd in the vault, crossed 3rd in the 300 hurdles and 4th in the 100 hurdles. Celina's other 'Top Dog' 'All WBL' performers were Autumn Brehm (2nd discus), Alyssa Hoyng (1st high jump), and the sprint relays comprised of Alayna Webb, Holli Brackman, Kelly Moeder, Kendra Fennig (4x100), Alayna, Megan Imwalle, Kelly, Kendra.
The Runnin' Women got scoring efforts from Paige Sutter (6th shot put), Kelly (6th long jumo), Ashtyn Phlipot (6th 400), Megan (4th 200, 5th high jump), Kendra (6th 200), Jenna Coon (6th 3200).
The Runnin' Women's final point came from the 4x400 relay. Although the quartet placed 6th in possibly the slowest 4x400 relay time in history (8:08.44), it's how they finished. Senior Michaela Wenning (2013 State High Jump Champion and winner of 4 events at the 2013 WBL Championship) was injured the whole 2014 season. Enduring a season of pain and frustration throughout the season, then not being able to compete at all, Micky's injured left leg was finally placed in a cast on Friday morning (the day of the WBL finals). Micky's final chance to compete as a high school athlete (She will compete for Colorado of the PAC 12 next year) was to anchor the 4x400 relay. Using crutches and in a cast, Micky took the baton to compete the Runnin' Women's Championship effort. She 'crutched', hopped, walked the 400 meters to get the relay to the finish, thus earning her only point of the season, and the TEAM'S 100th point for the Western Buckeye League Champion Celina Gals.
Next up...at the Tiffin District on May 21 and 23.
