Waterdogs at District... Tyus Temple, an Automatic Qualifier to State!

February 16, 2014
By Daniel Otten of Celina High School

WATERDOGS at DISTRICT!

State Qualifiers to be officially announced Sunday, Feb 16.

Friday evening, Feb 14, Celina's District Qualifying Waterdogs made a long trip to Cleveland State University (for one year only, due to construction at BGSU) for participation in the NW District Championship.  On Wednesday, Feb 12 the Divers did their thing at Oak Harbor, as four CHS Diving Dogs (Sawyer Weitzel, Olivia Schlotterer, Chandler Kimmel, Jake Browder) earned spots at State.  Friday's competition would determine the swimming State particpants.  On Friday the only absolute was that the top 2 finishers in each event would have 'Automatic' State Qualifying swims.  All other placers would have to have a top 16 'At Large' time from the four statewide districts.

Matt May's Waterdogs were well represented at District, with all 6 relays, as well as 17 inidivdual participants.  By meet's end, Celina swam well enough to send (unofficially, until Sunday afternoon when the OHSAA announces offical qualifiers) three relays and two individuals to Canton (to join the 4 divers already qualified).  'Top Dog' efforts came from seniors Tyus Temple and Michaela Wenning.  Tyus earned CHS's only 'Automatic Qualifying' performance with his 'School Record' runner-up placing in the 100 fly.  The 52.26 clocking broke his own record of a year ago (52.73).  Michaela looks to advance to State in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events.  She narrowly missed 'School Records' in each race.  Her times unofficially rank in the top 16 of non automatic qualifying swimmers.

Tyus teamed with Jared Fleagle, Ryan Miller, and Mason Baker in the 200 free relay which swam fast enough to be in the top 16 'At Large' times.  The medley relay of Jared, Garrett Weininger, Tyus, and Mason also look to be an 'At Large' participant.  Michaela and her relay mates Megan Muhlenkamp, Maddy Weininger, and Cami Dzendzel (200 free relay) are well on their way to being in Canton.

In the Team Scoring the Celina Men finished 7th, while the Women claimed 6th.

OFFICAL STATE QUALIFIERS WILL BE POSTED BY THE OHSAA on Sunday, Feb 16.
