Swimming/Diving Championship!

Wednesday, Jan 29, the 10 memebers of the Western Buckeye League finally got the chance to hit the pool for the concluding day of the WBL Swimming/Diving Championship Meet.  The swimming finals, hosted by Defiance H S were scheduled for Saturday, Jan 25, but wintery weather prevented the meet from going as scheduled.  The Divers did get their portion of the meet finished on schedule, last Thursday, Jan 23.

Celina's Swimmin' Women continued their rich tradition of top finishes in the meet as they placed 3rd in the final team standings.  Although CHS has never won a WBL title on the distaff side, the Ladies have been runner-up 13 times, third 3 times, and fourth 1 time in the 17 years of WBL swimming/diving!

Head coach Matt May's crew, led by diving coach Dave Koesters' Diving Dogs, got the Waterdogs off to a great start on Jan 23 with a 1-2-4 finish in the 1-meter (11-dive format) diving.  Olivia Schlotterer WON the event with 345.90 points.  Sawyer Weitzel took 2nd with 338.40, while Trinity Voisin was 4th with 301.90.  The Ladies challenged for the 'Team' title on Wednesday, in the most competitive WBL Championship Meet in the 17 year history.  Seven schools scored over 100 points, with 153 points separating those top seven.  Ottawa-Glandorf broke Lima Shanwee's 13 year stranglehold on the championship, as it amassed 254 points. Wapakoneta was a close 2nd with 245, followed by Celina (203), and Shawnee (188).  Kenton (113), St Marys (107), and Bath (101) also hit the century mark.

The Swimmin' Women were led in the pool by the WINNING effort of the 200-yard free relay of Megan Muhlenkamp, Maddy Weininger, Cami Dzendzel, and Michaela Wenning.  The foursome swam 1:42.79 for the win.  The same four took 2nd in the 400-yard free relay (3:48.66).  Individually Michaela Wenning was 'Top Dog' as she touched second in both the 50 and 100 free.  Her time of 24.44 for the 50 established a NEW SCHOOL RECORD for the event, breaking her own mark (24.50) of a year ago.  She swam 54.38 for her 100 free.  Megan Muhlenkmap had a nice day, taking 3rd in the 100 breast (1:13.33) and 4th in the 50 free (25.78).  Maddy Weininger earned all WBL (top 6) with her 5th place in the 200 individual medley (2:29.59).  Cami Dzendzel got a 6th in the 200 free (2:11.70).  Rounding out Celina's 'top six' finishers was the 200 medley relay of Alli Darras, Jenna Coon, Paige Sutter, and Katie Hoenie (2:09.09).
