Regional CC Meet
Saturday, October 26, both the Celina Runnin' Women and Men teams traveled to Tifffin's Hedges-Boyer Park for participation in the OHSAA's Tiffin Regional Cross-Country Championship Meet. The meet consisted of races in Divisions I, II, and III for both genders, with teams and individuals competing for births in the November 2, State Championship Meet. Sixteen teams, plus numerous individuals took part in each race, with the top 4 teams, and individuals in the top 16 places ( not on a qualifying team) advancing to 'State'. Celina's Runnin' Bulldogs had 'teams' in the Division II races, for both girls and boys.
Celina's girls took the course in the second race of the cool, blustery day (winds at 15-20 mph, gusts to 30 mph, 45-50 degrees). The Ladies' season ended with their finest 'team' effort of the fall. Four of the seven ran career or season best times as they grouped for a 12th place result. Lauren McDonough continued her late season improvement (as she missed the first six meets due to injury. She crossed the line in 42nd place of the 121 runners, with a clocking of 20:28, cutting :36 from her previous best time. A trio of Bulldogs claimed places 72, 74, and 75. Jenna Coon (21:26), Renee Robinson (21:27), and Nicole Bowsher (21:32 equalling her career best), took the spots respectively. Kendra Fennig took 91st in a season best 22:00. Beth Garwood clocked 22:31 as she finished 100th. Breah Anderson lowered her personal best time by :28 as she ran 22:48, good for 108th.
Two and one half hours later the Boys were at the line. As the Girls, the Guys ran their best 'team' race of the season. Cole Mertz's 12th place finish, along with three career best times combined to put the Guys a very respectable 9th place on the ledger. By virtue of his 12th spot, Cole EARNED his spot in the Division II State Championship Race on November 2. He becomes the fifth CHS male CC runner to compete at 'State'. Cole recorded a 16:34 for his efforts. Drew Donovan dropped :11 from his previous best as he crossed the line in 17:06, an impressive 28th of the 125 competitors. Roman Mitchell placed 71st with his 2nd best time of the season, 17:73. Michael Cron tripped the finish clock in a career best (by :23) 18:03, which put him 77th. Chad Downey wrapped up the scoring 5 as he placed 91st, in 18:20. Nick Marks recorded a personal best of 18:32 (:12 improvement) to finish 97th. Jacob Gilstrap claimed the 104th spot in 18:44.
With his 'State' meet qualification, Cole will head to Hebron for a November 2 date on the National Trail Raceway, 5000m course. Division II Boys race time is 2:15.
