Great Day to be a Runnin' Bulldog...at District!

Girls and Boys 'Teams' advance to Regional Championship!
Saturday, October 19, the Celina Runnin' Bulldogs traveled to Ottawa for participation in the OHSAA Division II, Ottawa District Cross Country Meet. Thirteen schools took part, looking to advance to the October 26, Regional Meet in Tiffin. In order to run in the Regional competition, teams needed a top 4 finish, or if not on a qualifying team, individuals had to be a top 16 placer.
Celina's contingent had an outstanding day, as both the Boys and GIrls 'Teams' ran well enough to run another week, at Regional! For only the fourth time in school history both genders qualified for Regional in the same season. The Guys return to Regional after a four year hiatus, the Gals after missing out in 2012.
The Boys got the day started, on the cool, rainy, muddy, slippery morning...perfect for real CC competition. Cole Mertz was again CHS's 'Top Dog' as he finished an impressive 4th of the 90 harriers, defeating a number of guys who beat him the previous week at league. Cole ran 16:40 for the 5000m distance. He was followed by Drew Donovan, who like Cole crossed ahead of a number of WBL runners who were faster last week. Drew took the 13th spot, in 17:23. Drew and Cole would have been individual qualifiers, but with the support of the remaining five Guys, advanced as a member of the Celina Team. Roman Mitchell (18:15), Chad Downey (18:16), and Michael Cron (18:22) had great days, packing together at 21, 23, and 25 respectively, giving the Bulldogs a total score of 86. The total placed Celina 4th, behind three State Ranked Squads: Defiance (37 points), Van Wert (49), and Eastwood (68). Shawnee was fifth with 136. Nick Marks tripped the timer in 19:07 for 43rd, with Jacob Gilstrap at 19:13, in 48th to complete the varsity seven.
The girls followed, on an even slippery, rainier course. The Runnin' Women came together for, by far...their 'race of the year'! All seven girls competed well as they combined for a fourth place result, putting them in Regional field of 16. As with the boys, State ranked teams took the top spots. Eastwood won the race with 51 points, followed by Van Wert at 56. Third was WBL rival St. Marys (85), with the Lady Dogs fourth with 101. Defiance took fifth with 119. Last week at WBL Defiance defeated Celina by 16. Lauren McDonogh was first for the Gals, running a career best 21:04. Lauren's time put her 12th of the 81 finishers. As with the Guys, a pack of Dogs clustered together to cross in 16th, 18th, and 23rd. Jenna Coon (21:16, season best), Nicole Bowsher (21:32 career best), and Renee Robinson (21:39) filled those crucial spots. Coming through as the fifth, and invaluable, scorer was Kendra Fennig at 35th, in 22:20. Displacers for CHS were Beth Garwood (38th, 22:42), and Breah Anderson (51st, 23:41). Lauren and Jenna would have advanced individually, but with the outstanding 'team' effort, all seven get a chance to run in Tiffin.
Cole, Drew, Lauren, and Jenna earned 'All District' accolades, play placing in the top 16. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL RUNNING BULLDOGS!
Next up...Regional Meet at Tiiffin, Saturday, October 26. Girls run at 11:45, Boys at 2:15.
