WESTERN BUCKEYE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP MEET!
Celina's Runnin' Bulldogs took part in the annual Western Buckeye League Cross-Country Championship Meet on Saturday, October 12. Both the Boys and Girls finished 4th in the 'team' standings.
The first race of the morning was the High School Girls. All 10 WBL schools fielded full contingents, with a total of 112 ladies toeing the line. Sun, calm winds, 65 degree temperatures greeted the competitors, setting the stage for excellent performances. Celina's Runnin' Women took advantage of the situation. Five Ladies, including the top three Runnin' Women finishers, crossed the line with either career or season best marks. Leading the way was Renee Robinson. Renee lowered her personal best time by :25, crossing the line in 21:16. Her 12th place finish earned 'First Team All WBL' accolades, as the top 12 finishers in each H S race garnered the recognition. Close behind, in the 17th spot was Lauren McDonough. Lauren ran a career fastest 21:22. She chopped :47 off her previous best. By virtue of her placing (13-22), Lauren was awarded 'Special Mention All WBL'. Just missing out on 'All League' were Jenna Coon and Nicole Bowsher. The twosome placed 23rd and 24th respectively. Jenna ran a season best 21:36 (a :38 drop), with Nicole at 21:38. Rounding out the Celina scoring five was Kendra Fennig (36th, 22:58). Sarah Daniel and Daisha Elliott completed the varsity seven as both ran season fastest times. Sarah (45th) ran 23:28, Daisha (47th) covered the 5000m course in 23:32. As team Celina totaled 112, good for 4th place. State ranked Van Wert won the team title with 34 points, followed by the host school, St Marys (67), and Defiance (96). Shawnee was 3 points behind CHS in 5th, with 115.
The Guys took the course after the Gals. In a competitive race, with two top ranked teams and three closely matched squads, the final results validated the prerace expectations. Defiance and Van Wert lived up to their State rankings. Defiance won the championship with 35 points. VW was close behind with 44. Wapakoneta, Celina, and Shawnee battled for the 3-5 spots, with Wapak clipping the Bulldogs by three, 96 to 99. Shawnee took 5th, scoring 120. Celina was once again led by Cole Mertz. Cole ran 16:47 to take the 6th place spot of the 133 harriers, good for a 'First Team All WBL' honor. He was followed by 'Special Mention All WBL' honoree Drew Donovan, who was 15th in 17:32. Roman Mitchell (27th, 18:10), Chad Downey (31st, 18:18), and Michael Cron (32nd, 18:20) comprised the remainder of the scoring five. Michael's time equalled his career best.
