Excellent Day for Waterdogs at District!

February 21, 2013
By Daniel Otten of Celina High School

Friday, February 15 Celina's Waterdogs took part in the OHSAA Division II, Bowling Green District Swimming Meet.  On Wednesday, Feb 13 the Divers competed (with 4 CHS divers advancing to State). Friday, the swimmers took their shot at making it to State.  In order qualify to the State Championship Meet in Canton on February 21-22 swimmers had to place 1st or 2nd at District (automatic births) or have one of the state's best 16 at large times.  Fourteen Waterdogs hit the pool, hoping to have their best swims of the season and earn another week in the pool.

Celina's successes were abundant as almost every Waterdogs peaked for the District, swimming season, career, even 'School Record' best times.  The day got off to a blistering start ar the quartet of Paige Dorsten, Kandace Eichenauer, Michaela Wenning and Brooke Mertz broke the Celina 'School Record' for the 200 medley relay.  Their 1:54.30 chopped 1.07 seconds off the previous mark from 2011.  The Ladies also placed 5th in the District with a time that looks to be a State qualifying mark!  In the 50 free, Michaela shattered the Celina 'School Record' of 24.63 (2009), by touching the pad in 24.50, good for 4th place.  Micky's time looks to be a State qualifying mark!  Tyus Temple was CHS's other 'School Record' breaker as he recorded a 52.73 for the 100 fly.  His clocking was .76 below the 2012 mark of 53.49.  Tyus' 3rd place result will most likely earn him a trip to Canton.  Unofficially, the Waterdog's other State qualifying swim came from the girls 200 free relay.  Michaela, Megan Muhlenkamp, Paige, and Brooke swam 1:40.84 for a 4th place finish.  The foursome's time was 1.11 off the 'School Record'.  Divers Collen Byer, Chandler Kimmel, Olivia Schlotterer, and Samantha Ringo will also represent CHS at State.

Close to the 16 statewide at large times which qualiying to State are the Girls 400 free relay and Kasyn Fishbaugh in the 50 free.  Official 'at larger' bids will be posted by the OHSAA on Sunday, Feb. 17.
