Runnin' Women WIN Western Buckeye League Championship!

May 19, 2009
By Daniel Otten of Celina High School

The 35th Annual Women's Western Buckeye League Track & Field Championship Meet was hosted by St Marys Memorial on Friday.  The meet, originally schedule to be run over two days, was reduced to one day due to weather.  The one day event was packed full of excitement as top three WBL teams traded wins, placings, and points all the way to the final event before a winner was determined.  In the end, it was the Runnin' Women of Celina who came out on top, winning the final event of the meet (the 4 x 400 relay) to secure its 21st WBL Championship.  Celina finished with 116 points, five ahead of runner-up Shawnee and 10 ahead of third place Defiance.  It was a special day for the Lady Dogs as coaches and fans alike witnessed the emergence of a young Celina team.  Seventeen Celina Ladies took part in the WBL meet, led by three reliable 'Old Dog' seniors...Cayla Hellwarth, LeAnn Ward, and Kelsey Waterman.  One junior, four sophomores, and nine freshmen rounded out the CHS squad.  A bunch of 'Young Pups' began the season in March.  On Friday the 'Pups' earned the label of 'Dogs'.  CHS scored in 15 of the 17 contested events with 14 of the 17 girls directly contributing to the point total.  The three who did not score points contributed by bumping opponents from possible scoring positions.  Seven times CHS finished events as WBL Champions!  Cayla Hellwarth (PV) , Hannah Fleck (1600 and 800) , Lexi Mills (100IH and 300LH) , Lizz Carr (HJ) , and the 4 x 400 foursome of Lexi, Kelsey Waterman , Cayla, and Hannah all claimed WBL event championships.  Lindsey Watercutter and the 4 x 800 relay of Andrea Bell, Cassie Mosier, Kelsey, and Ashley Coon had runner-up efforts.  Third place points were earned by the 4 x 200 relay of Kacy Stachler, Lexi, Cayla, Megan Thobe, as well as Hannah (100IH).  Andrea (3200), Kelsey (400) and the 4 x 100 relay of Kacy, Lizz, Alex Parker, Megan scored fourth place results.

CONGRATULATIONS RUNNIN' WOMEN ON YOUR WBL CHAMPIONSHIP and Celina's 21st WBL Title.  Next up....the Tiffin District on Wednesday and Friday, May 20, 22.
