Phenomenal Career Comes to a Close

September 23, 2012
By David Smyth of Cascade High School

Jessica Smyth battled the wind and cool conditions to shoot an 82 at the Regional round of the IHSAA tournament.   She was in a playoff with two other girls for the 4th and 5th spot to advance.  Unfortunately, Jessica was the first eliminated in the sudden-death playoff, ending her stellar high school career.

Even though she finished in a tie for 6th overall out of 108 girls and only three shots away from the Medalist, she is not one of the twenty players to move on to the State Finals.  The three low teams advance and then their scores are wiped out.  Of the remaining teams and individuals, only the top 5 advance.  Jessica was caught by the numbers.  Of the three advancing teams, only Carmel had two low individual scores (80).  Had Whiteland (4 shots) or Roncalli (5shots) advanced, there would not have been a playoff.
