For those of you that just look at the scoreboard, the debut of the 2009 Lady Imps and Head Coach Laura Kerrigan was a tainted one.
Despite a strong start to the second half, Cary dropped their season and home opener to the Lady Spartans from Sanderson by the 1-0 score.
Sanderson Junior Courtney Trumps netted the only score of the contest in the 22nd minute.
Trumps taking a shot from the right side of the box, sending it toward the center portion of the net, was denied by a diving stop from Sophomore Keeper Annie McHenry.
Unfortunately for McHenry, while one of her defenders was getting into proper position, her save deflected toward her team mate and into the net.
CHS opened the second half with strong pressure, and in the 48th and 50th minutes, had two great scoring opportunities.
The best opportunity coming from Freshman Kelly Glendenning from the right side as she was going near post but Sanderson's keeper Kaylan Bragga made a diving stop to keep the Lady Imps off the board.
Coach Kerrigan said after the match, despite the outcome, she was very pleased with the way her players worked. She was especially pleased how her players came out in the second half of play.
Cary will head right back to action Monday night as they will face Pinecrest High School at home.
