CARY - The 4-A swimming and diving championships couldn't have gone any better for the Apex girls Friday at the Curran Aquatic Center in Cary. Their first event ended by setting a new state record in all classifications. So did their final event. In all, the Cougars swam their way to the program's second state championship, the first one coming 20 years ago in 1991.
"Coming in and having our girls take the relay and set the state record just set the tone for the night," Apex coach Tim Kane said. "Once they got that, it was almost no stopping them."
Apex first broke the state record in the girls 200-yard medley relay, edging East regional winner Cary. Holding onto the lead going into 400-yard freestyle relay, the Cougars shattered the old state record by more than two seconds with a 3:29:23, which was only 13 one hundreths of a second ahead of Panther Creek.
Second-place Cary (177.5 points) and third-place Panther Creek (168) had the co-most outstanding swimmers in the Imps' Victoria Mitchell and the Catamounts' Henriette Stenkvist.
