END OF AN ERA: Cary wrestling streaks snapped by PC

February 3, 2011
Cary High School

CARY - The date Feb. 2, 2011 will be remembered as a historic one for Panther Creek's wrestling. Not only did the Catamounts win its first conference championship — but more significantly, it was the night they ended three of Cary's winning streaks that had last 20 years or more.

It was Cary's first home regular-season loss since 1982 (409 straight matches) and first conference loss since 1990. It will mark the first time Cary has not won a conference title since 1983.

The Catamounts (18-2, 8-0) won 31-25, but needed a final-bout win from senior Anthony Mejia to pull off the biggest win in program history. Cary (25-3, 7-1).

"I really don't know what to say. I'm beside myself," Panther Creek Jon Armfield said. "If we were going to do it, this was the year to do it."
