CARY - It was during a loss at Apex — one that Cary coach Allan Gustafson said was his team's most disappointing performance of the season — in which the longtime head man had an epiphany.

"Why is this 6-foot-6 kid on my bench when we're getting out-rebounded by 18?" he thought to himself.

Imps (12-6, 8-4) sophomore Stavian Allen, the lanky reserve forward, still wasn't playing despite starting forward Donte Johnson losing his eligibility after the winter break. Instead, Gustafson had shifted players around to different positions, hoping to fill the void in that way.

After a 0-2 start to the 2011 half of the season, Gustafson decided to start Allen in Johnson's old spot and move players like Austin Brannen, DomiNick Downing and Colton Lehman to their natural roles. The move has paid off to the tune of three straight wins, the latest coming Thursday 55-50 over Fuquay-Varina (7-10, 4-7).
