Cary forced to forfeit its finales
February 26, 2013
Cary High School
Cary’s varsity girls and boys basketball teams were forced to forfeit their season finales against Athens Drive to prevent the school from surpassing the maximum number of regular-season games allowed by the N.C. High School Athletic Association.
Cary had been approved for multiple endowment games, but those games cannot extend the season.
The wording in the NCHSAA handbook had thrown off Cary officials.
In the basketball part of the handbook, it says: “An Endowment game may be played, which does not count against the season limit.”
In the endowment game section of the handbook, it says: “These games are optional, one per sport. Exceptions to one Endowment game per sport require NCHSAA approval. They may not extend the season, and do not count against the season limitation in that sport and will not be used as part of the tie-breaking system.”
