Cary Varsity sweeps Fuquay-Varina

September 26, 2009
By David Maney II of Cary High School

Fuquay-Varina - After dropping their last two games, a non-conference loss to Broughton and Tri-9 conference loss to Panther Creek, Cary was looking to point their season back in the right direction.

Despite slow starts in the first two out of three games by CHS, they closed out all three games with big scoring rallies as they finished off the Lady Bengals in the first game of the second half of their season with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-15 win.

The Lady Imps opens the first game with a 4-1 lead but Fuquay quick rebound and took the lead at 5-4 off a kill and a block by Raquelle Keeton.

The middle portion of the game was a back and forth battle as the two teams exchanged side-out points until the game was tied at 12.

That is when CHS went on a big scoring run.

Following a kill by Senior Caroline Salevan for the side-out, Seniors Laura Poag, Clarke Glendenning and Morgan Williams helped extend the Lady Imp lead out to 5 points, 17-12, forcing the FVHS Head Coach to call for a time-out.

After the time-out, Keeton did get the kill for the Lady Bengals making it 17-13, but that was short lived as Poag got another kill to get the ball back for the Lady Imps.

From there Williams went on a 6-point service run putting CHS one-point away from the win. During that run Junior Alie Endres and Salevan both recorded kills for Cary and Williams also had an Ace.

Endres got the winning kill for CHS in game one. Final score CHS 25, FVHS 14.

The second game started out much like the first one did.

Cary getting the small 3-1 advantage only to see FVHS comeback and grab the lead back at 5-3.

This time the Lady Bengals held the lead a bit longer.

After CHS tied the game at 5, after a kill by Endres, Fuquay called for their first-time out of the second game and the team responded after the time out extending their lead out to a 3-point advantage at 8-5.

With the score 12-8, FVHS, the Lady Imps once again rallied going on a 9-point run retaking the lead 17-12.

Salevan got the kill for the side-out, followed by a kill by Endres, and an Ace by Junior Kylie Howe. Fuquay then committed an error for another Cary point tying the game at 12, then Glendenning and Williams both had kills making it 14-12, CHS, and forcing Fuquay to take their second time-out of the game.

Following the time-out, Fuquay committed another error, Howe recorded another ace, and Williams finished the run with a kill making it 17-12.

Three straight CHS errors helped the Lady Bengals close the gap to 2-points, but CHS fixed the problem and went on another run 5-point run. Williams and Endres were responsible for all points during the run as Endres recorded 3 points off 2 kills and a dink, while Williams recorded 2 kills.

Fuquay wasn't about to go quietly as they once again made it a 2-point game with a 5-point run of their own.

Dani Plante got the kill for the side-out, then Keeton recorded a kill and then a block making it 22-18. Two more Cary errors made it 22-20, CHS.

After a 4-hit error by FVHS, Glendenning recorded an Ace to make it 24-20, then a FV error gave the Lady Imps their final point for the win. Final score CHS 25, FVHS 20.

The Lady Imps had game three pretty much in hand as they jumped out to a 5-point advantage to start at 7-2.

With the game tied at 1, Glendenning and Williams recorded a big block for the side-out. Following a F-V error, Glendenning recorded two straight Aces giving Cary a 5-1 lead.

After an exchange of side-outs, Sophomore Erin Harwood got a kill to make it 7-2, CHS.

Fuquay-Varina closed within 2-points as a block by Keeton and Madison Erstine was sandwiched between two Cary errors making it 7-5.

The Lady Imps slowly kept extending their lead out, 3-points, 5-points, then 6-points at 15-9.

With the score 10-7, CHS, Glendenning got the point for CHS with a punch shot that went just over the hands of the FVHS blockers. Junior Elisa DeCarolis helped make it a 6-point lead at 13-7 with her 2-point service.

With Cary leading 18-12, Harwood extended the lead out to 7-points with her kill for the side-out.

After a F-V error, Harwood had another kill making it 21-12, CHS. Harwood kept her hot had as she had recorded another point scoring off a block out of bounds making it 23-14, CHS, two-points away from the win.

Two more Lady Bengal errors closed out game three giving the win and game to CHS. Final score CHS 25, FVHS 15.
