Saturday afternoon, Senior Kaitlin Ragan and Sophomore Carly Kingery combined for scoring honors with 16 points each to cap a 65-50 conference win over Tri-Central (5-13). The Cougars also celebrated the playing careers of Ragan and fellow Senior Paige Spesard and hosted the Coaches vs Cancer game. It was a busy Saturday afternoon! The Cougars and Trojans played evenly throughout the first half. Ragan started quickly with 8 first quarter points in route to a 13-13 tie at the break. The Cougars were down 5-1 before Ragan ran off 5 points to give Carroll the lead at 6-5. Bailey Worl followed with a fielder and a free-throw and the lead was 9-5. The Trojans fought back with 8 points wrapped around free-throws from Ragan and a quarter ending basket from Libby Eller.
The Cougars used scoring from 7 different players in the second quarter to score 17 points and take a 1-point lead into halftime 30-29. Tri-Central kept pace throughout the quarter. TC opened with 4 points, the Cougars responded with 4. TC got a rebound basket off a missed free-throw for a 19-17 lead. MaKayla Jackson made two freebies for Carroll followed by an Eller 2-pointer. Kingery made one of two from the line, then Worl with 2 more throws before Gabbie Evans finished with a steal and layup at the break to give the hosts the lead.
Paige Speasrd started the scoring in the third quarter with a deuce. TC landed a 3-pointer to tie the game. Ragan was knocked to the floor while shooting a 3-pointer and had to exit the game. Bailey Worl made one of the three free-throws to give the lead to Carroll. Paige Spesard then hit a 3-pointer and the Cougars had taken control of the game. TC must have done something to fire up Carly Kingery because she ran off 9 points to 2 from TC to end the quarter. Carroll’s lead grew to 47-36 at the break. The Cougars out-scored the Trojans 17-7 for the quarter. Kingery, Spesard and Ragan opened the final period with 8 points. TC continued to fight getting 7 early points to keep pace. Carroll made 12 of 16 free-throws and TC struggled to make shots late in the game. The Cougars had a very balanced attack. Ragan and Kingery had 16 points each to go with 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 8 steals. Worl added 10 points and 7 rebounds in her first game back from injury. Spesard had 9 points while Eller added 8 with 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Gabbie Evans, Brooke Ennis and MaKayla Jackson had 2 points each to finish the Cougars scoring column.
