The Cougars hosted the Comets from Caston on Saturday evening. The (6-7) Comets have shown improvement in the last few meetings with the Cougars and this game was no exception. Carroll built and early lead and then pulled away from the Comets for a low-scoring 38-27 victory. Kaitlin Ragan led the way for the Cougars with 13 points. She started strong with 9 first quarter points and finished with 4 in the final quarter. The Comets started fast with 2 baskets and a free-throw from junior Ingrid Gonzales and held an early 5-2 lead. Gonzales led all scorers with 14. Then Ragan got involved with free-throws and some layups. A basket by Jackson and a three from Paige Spesard and the Cougars led 14-10 at the break. A low scoring second quarter saw the visitors cut into the Cougar lead. At halftime the Cougars held a one-point advantage 17-16.
Carroll played a solid second half with 10 points in each quarter while holding the Comets to 12 points for the half. Carroll used 5 points from Jackson and an early three from Eller and were off to an aggressive start. Spesard chipped in a late fielder in the quarter and the lead was 27-21 at the break. Another early 3 from Eller started the Cougars in the fourth. A Kingery 3 added to the Cougar lead while the visitors were struggling with the Cougar pressure defense. Ragan capped the Cougar scoring with two break-away layups. A nice combination of scoring in the second half kept the Comets at bay and allowed the Cougars to finish going away. Libby Eller added 9 points, Jackson 7 points and Spesard finished with 5 and Kingery had 3.
The Cougars move on 11-5 on the season and will host Tri-Central on Saturday for their final home game of the season and a critical conference matchup. Game time is 1230. See you there!
