Carroll Drops 2nd in a row, loses to Western Panthers
January 15, 2013Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School
Carroll fought hard against the Western Panthers, but the visitors proved too much to handle for the still depleted Cougars , falling 64-46. In a game that was much closer than the score would appear, the Cougars could not keep pace with the O’Neal twin sisters from Western. The two Panthers accounted for 46 points, 8 rebounds and 11 steals. A decisive third quarter start put the Cougars in a deficit they could not completely overcome.
The Panthers lead 25-23 at halftime in a hard-fought first half. The Cougars countered everything the Panthers threw at them and kept pace. The third quarter opened with the Panthers pressuring the Cougar ball-handlers in a half-court trapping defense that the home team could not break. The pressure resulted in steals for the visitors and layups on the other end. The Panthers outscored the Cougars 21-6 in the period and never looked back. The lead at the break was 46-29. The Cougars were not finished fighting. Libby Eller, Kaitlin Ragan and MaKayla Jackson started the final quarter on a 14-4 run, bringing the Cougars within 50-42. The Cougars had the momentum for the first 2:30 of the final quarter. Western countered with the O’Neal twins again and put the game away with a 12-4 run. Carroll never gave up, continuing to pressure the shooters and fight for rebounds.
Kaitlin Ragan had another solid game with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. MaKayla Jackson added 11 points with 8 rebounds. Libby Eller had 9 points with 2 assists and 2 steals. Paige Spesard contributed 7 points with 4 rebounds and Carly Kingery added 3 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists.
