It was not pretty, but it was a win. The Cougars moved to 7-2 on the season with a 31-29 win against Pioneer on Saturday afternoon. Carroll’s defense worked very well, holding the visitors to 25% shooting from the floor and 29 points total. However, the Cougars had struggles of their own, 5 of 10 from the foul stripe and 32% from the floor. The Cougars welcomed the return of Senior Kaitlin Ragan and she earned game scoring honors with 18. She added 2 assists and 3 steals and the Cougars needed all she gave them. Carroll struggled in the opening quarter and found themselves in a 6-5 deficit. Turnovers plagued both teams early. Ragan got hot in the second period, scoring 11 points while the Carroll defense began to apply more pressure to the Panthers, holding them to 6 points in the period. Carroll ended the half with a 21-10 lead and control of the game.
Pioneer changed tactics in the third quarter and it worked for a while. The Panthers were able to knock down some shots while the Cougars struggle from the field continued. Pioneer closed the deficit to 28-21 at the break. Kingery and Ragan helped the Cougars in the final stanza with made baskets and converted on free-throws to keep the Cougars in front. In the end the defense was enough as the Panthers could not find a go-ahead basket and never tied the game. The Cougars posted a 31-29 victory.
Ragan lead all scorers with 18 while Kingery chipped in her steady game with 7 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals. Paige Spesard, Libbie Eller and Gabbie Evans each had a 2-pointer to finish the scoring for the Cougars. Carroll will host the Carroll Classic this Saturday. Visiting teams include Lowell, Northwestern and University. Games begin at 9am. Come watch these ladies play ball!!
