12-07-10 -- Cardinals drop to Tiffin Calvert
December 10, 2010By Chad Rutkowski of Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School
The Boys Varsity headlined a triple on Tuesday, December 7, hosted by the Tiffin Calvert Senecas. The Cardinals came out strong and went toe-to-toe with the Senecas through most of the first half. An 8-2 run by Calvert at the close of the first quarter put the Cardinals down at the half, 20-29. Stritch struggled offensively in the third quarter and scored only 8 points against Calvert’s 16 and started the fourth quarter down 17. The mighty Cardinals took the court in the fourth and responded to Coach Rieker’s challenge to “win the 4th” With 3 minutes left in the game, Stritch had cut Calvert’s lead to just 8 on baskets scored by seniors Justin Staler and Matt Guy. A Calvert timeout ended the Stritch run, and the Cardinals ended up losing 43-59. “Tonight, the team proved to themselves that when they play composed ‘Cardinal Basketball’, they can compete with anyone,” said Coach Dave Rieker. Stritch actually scored more buckets in the game but the Senecas nailed 19 of 27 free throws vs. Stritch’s 2 of 7. Justin led the Cardinals with 19 points and Matt had another strong game scoring 8 points with 3 assists. Conner Kelsey was strong on the boards with 8 rebounds and chipped in 6 points.
In other action, the Freshman and Junior Varsity teams were defeated, but the coaching staff is seeing much improvement in both teams.
The Cardinals take on rival Toledo Christian on Friday, December 10th at home in the first TAAC league game of the year. The team would love to see another packed house! Varsity game begins at 7:30pm, JV at 6:00pm, and Freshman at 4:30pm.
