Lady Cards Clamp Down On Rangers
January 8, 2013Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School
The Lady Cardinals returned to TAAC action as they entertained the Lady Rangers of Northwood for a backyard rivarly at "The Nest". Both teams opened the first quarter tenative, not taking very good care of the basketball, trading baskets and turnovers, but the Lady Cardinals knocked in a late bucket to take a 10-8 lead. The second quarter saw both teams trading baskets and the Lady Cardinals holding a 21-19 lead going into the half.
The second half saw the home team dial up their full court defensive pressure and open up their running game, doubling up the Lady Rangers 20-10 in the third quarter, to close with a 41-29 lead after three quarters. It was more of the same in the final stanza, as the Lady Cardinals continued to frustrate the Lady Rangers with their defensive pressure. A very strong second half allowed the Lady Cardinals to cruise to a 51-33 victory, outscoring the visitors 30-14 after the break. The Lady Cardinals were led in scoring by Senior Abby Mass with a game high 18 points. Sophomore Cecelia Gozdowski, playing her best overall game, contributed a double-double with 16 points and 18 rebounds. Junior Caty Rieker chipped in 9 points, while the Freshman duo Kali Hardy and Maggie Merren had 3 and 2 points respectively. Junior Colleen Walsh and Senior Olivia Latz closed out the scoring with 2 and 1.
