August 22, 2012
By Chad Rutkowski of Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School

Cardinal Stritch hosted the 18th Annual NWOCSA Cross Country Championships at Maumee Bay State Park on Monday, August 20th.  In the varsity boys race, Sandusky St. Mary's won the championship with 26 points, followed by Norwalk St. Paul with 61.  Cardinal Stritch (75) edged Tiffin Calvert (76) for third place.  Leading the way for the Cardinals was sophomore Tim Lynn in third place, with a time of 18:34.  Rounding out the top five for the Cardinals was Jake Lynn in 12th (20:15), Bobby Romstadt in 16th (20:28), Nathaniel Kuhn in 17th (20:34), and Robert Johnson in 27th (21:58).  Also running for the team was Nick Korducki (28, 22:20), Tyler Gawrych (35, 22:59), Kyle Killian (38, 23:08), Zack Matthews, 42, 23:41), Casey Flowers (55, 26:39), and Humberto Teran (58, 27:38).

In the varsity girls race, Tiffin Calvert placed first with 28 points and the runner-up was Sandusky St. Mary's with 56 points.  Due to an injury suffered in practice last week, junior Jessica Zavela was unable to run for the Cardinals.  With only four runners, Cardinal Stritch did not receive a team score but did have some excellent individual efforts.  Leading the way for the girls was junior Rosa Mondragon in 10th place (23:33).  Abbie Reichert finished in 20th (25:54), Cailyn Horna in 24th (26:08) and Hannah Tucker in 45th (31:21).  Emily Turski and Kristine Below will be available to run for the team in later races this season.

The Kateri Academy had several great individual efforts in the junior high championship races.  Seventh grader Andrew Flowers received a medal for his third place finish in the two mile race (13:14).  In the girls race, 8th grader Alexandrea Derrer also received a medal for her second place finish (15:25).  Brook Jennings completed her first race of the season in 14th place (17:54).  At the conclusion of the team races, Cardinal Stritch and the Kateri Academy provided a "team feed" for all of the visiting teams and coaches.

The cross country team will be back in action on Saturday, August 25th, at the Panther "Run To Fun" race hosted by Sandusky St. Mary's Central Catholic High School.  Races begin at 8:30 AM at Mills Creek Golf Course, in Sandusky, Ohio.
