Cardinals Squeak by Lakers!
February 6, 2012Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School
Thursday night had the Lady Cardinals travelling to Danbury in a crucial TAAC battle. With league standings and important tournament implications on the line the Lady Cardinals found themselves in a very physical battle. All did not start well for our Lady Hoopsters, as they found themslves down 12-7 after one quarter. As the second quarter opened the Lady Cardinals could not capitalize on the Lady Lakers foul trouble, despite being in the bonus for much of the second stanza, the Lady Cardinals were a miserable 1-6 at the foul line, with the majority of those charity tosses being one and one opportunities. The first half came to a close with the Lady Cardinals staring at a 21-12 deficit. The Lady Cardinals regrouped in the third quarter, playing with more desire and confidence they eliminated Danbury's 9 point lead. Sparked by a better offense performance and a renewed focus at the foul line, the Lady Cardinals found themselves tied at 25-25 by outscoring the Lady Lakers 13-4 in the third stanza. The very physical fourth quarter saw both teams trading baskets, but unlike the opening half the Lady Cardinals showed great poise at the foul line, converting on 7-10 chances to capture a hard fought 38-35 victory. The Lady Cardinals playing their first game after the loss of Senior point guard and floor general Marisa Katafiasz, who encouraged and cheered for her teammates, were led in scoring by Junior Abby Mass with 4 points. Senior Broghan Gasser played a very strong game inside game contributing 7 points. Sophomore Caty Rieker took over as floor general and chipped in 4 points and a strong floor game. Senior Ally Niehaus controlled the backboards with 10 rebounds and 4 points. Freshman Cecelia Gozdowski gave the Lady Cardinals a strong performance of the bench with 4 points, all in the critical third quarter. Junior Alex Veres and Junior Hannah Tucker closed out the scoring with 3 and 2 points respectively. The win pushes the Lady Cardinals to 6-5 in TAAC action and 6-10 overall.
