Home » Girls' Basketball NewsLady Tigers to Honor and Collect for Victims of NewtownDecember 17, 2012 By Bob Rickman of Warrensburg Girls BasketballThe Warrensburg Lady Tigers Basketball team is hosting Marshall on Tuesday night at Warrensburg High School in a tripleheader starting at 4:30. Tuesday night's game will not only be about basketball, but about remembrance. The team will honor the victims, and help the families and all those affected by this unthinkable event in Newtown, CT last week.
"Everyone last week stopped and realized this world was a place that will never be the same after what happened at Newtown," Coach Bob Rickman said. "There have been school shootings before, but never has it happened in quite the manner of the events of last week."
At the gate, donations will be accepted to send to the victim's fund established by the United Way of Western Connecticut.
"Our players and staff just felt like this was one way we could show our thoughts were with the victims, all of us in one way or another could think what if that was someone we had known," Rickman said. "Our hearts are saddened, but we want to bring awareness, and knew if only a small amount can be raised, it is one more thing that can be done to help the healing of the community in Newtown."
We would like to show as many people as possible that we all care about the lives of our children and our educators. We are united as a community in our efforts to find ways to better protect our children. The event last week will never be forgotten, and that whether you can donate or not, we want to show our love for life, and we will always be there to protect it.
Freshman will play at 4:30, junior varsity at 6:00, and varsity at 7:30, with a moment of silence and remembrance for those affected prior to the start of the varsity contest.
