Dog Take Down Jays, Win District Title

May 22, 2012

In a hard fought battle, the Kearney girls soccer team paid the Liberty Blue Jays back and won the Class 3, District 16 title Wednesday, 2-1.

The Blue Jays had handed Kearney one it its two losses in the third game of the season. This time it was the Dogs' turn to howl, and they had to play a little longer to get it.

After letting the Blue Jays score early in the game, the Dogs got serious and the defense
shut the Jays down.

Jordyn Knox found the net for the Dogs to tie the game 1-1.  That was still the score
after two sudden death 15 minute overtimes.

The game would be decided on the best of 5 penalty kicks.

Keeper Morgan Hartzler stopped the first Jay kicker. Then Alex Massey stepped up to take the first kick for the Dogs. She aced it.

After 3 rounds,  Liberty had made two PKs and Kearney had three. Jesse Hartzler and Allie Hess had aced their shots for the Dogs. Then the fourth shooter for Liberty missed.

Kenzie Cook stepped to the PK spot.

"She makes it we win," Coach Jackie Haller said. "She misses and Liberty has a chance to tie.
Cookie nailed the shot to clinch the title."

The Dogs are back in action Tuesday against Park Hill South , the District 15 champion.
