Bears Roll Despite Slow Start

September 10, 2011
By of Bryan High School

Despite the 48-14 score, the Bryan Golden Bears (3-0. 2-0) had some early trouble with the Delta Panthers (1-2, 0-2).

FIRST QUARTER

The Golden Bears got on the board first on their second drive of the game. The 38-yd pass from Collin Bacon to Derek Hug put the Bears on the board with 6:49 left in the first. Delta had no problem responding as Micah Mohr connected with Cody Miller and 47-yards later, the score was tied 7-7. After the kickoff, the Bears drove 58-yards in 3 plays as Bacon and Matt Chaney would hook up on a 40-yard touchdown completion. The Bears then failed at a 2-point conversion and the score would be 13-7.

SECOND QUARTER

Bacon was amazing in the first quarter by air, but the junior QB will certify that he can be a duel threat as he ran the ball 76-yards for the touchdown. After the extra point, the Bears went up 20-7. Later in the quarter, Bacon found Hug for another touchdown for the 1-play, 72-yard drive. Going into half, the Golden Bears would lead 27-7.

THIRD QUARTER

The best drive of the night came in the third quarter as the Bears drove 98-yard in 11 plays with Bacon and Hug once again getting together for the 15-yard touchdown. The score going into the final stanza would be 34-7 Bears.

FOURTH QUARTER

Delta would get back on the board with a Tyler Fahrer run of 3 yards to bring the score to 34-14. On the ensuing kickoff, Travis Peters would fumble the ball and Delta would recover on the Bryan 22. However, Delta was facing a 3rd and 14 when Mohr would throw the ball right to Bryan's Brandon Poncsak and he would take it 90+ yards to the house (possible school record). Tory Savage would miss the PAT so the Bears would be up 40-14. The next Delta series would result in a safety on a bad snap that sailed out of the endzone. With the score being 42-14, Bryan JV runningback Daniel Pendergrast would score is first career varsity touchdown to bring us to our final 48-14 with a missed PAT by Savage.
