Bryan's Vincent Advances To Districts
May 16, 2014, Defiance -- For the 6th consecutive year, Bryan advanced a boys player to Districts as Derek Vincent made it to the semi-final round of Sectionals which will be played on Saturday.
Defiance College hosted the tennis sectionals for area teams as 70 participants played for the right to move on. Out of that 70, only 4 singles players and 4 doubles teams advance.
The day started out well for the Bears as all seven players advanced to the second round. In doubles, Nathan Lamore and Josh Stark beat out Napoleon in the first round before falling to the #4 seed from Archbold. In singles Scott Ewonus blanked his opponent from Ayersville before losing to the overall #1 seed from Rossford while Zach Bauer put together a solid match over his Maumee opponent before dropping his second round match against Ottawa Hills.
Derek Vincent's journey to the semi-finals included a tough first round match as he beat out Levi Rees from Wauseon 6-4, 6-2. In the second round, Vincent and Ottawa Hills' Kevin Hoeflinger played a marathon match of nearly two and half hours before Vincent prevailed 7-6(4), 6-4.
With only a 30 minute break, Vincent had to return to the court for his third round match against Maumee's #1 player Austin Maples. The match would end up being the last one on the court for the day as Vincent encountered another two hour battle before clinching his District birth by a score of 6-3, 7-5.
Sectional semifinals and finals matches take place at Defiance College on Saturday with Districts taking place at Bowling Green State University next Wednesday.
