Bears Break Four-Year Drought
April 22, 2014, Bryan -- The last time the Bryan boys tennis team beat their counterparts from Wauseon was 2010. But last night the Bears broke that dominance with a down-to-the-wire 3-2 victory over the Indians.
Bryan started off well with a convincing 6-4, 6-0 win at first doubles as the tandem of Drew Kaufman and Eliot Pitman remained undefeated together. Wauseon would take the second doubles match in a second set tie-breaker to even up the score.
With both doubles matches in the books, the winner would be determined by the outcome of the three singles matches.
The Bears struck first with a solid win at third singles as Bryan's Josh Stark continued his undefeated season at the position. He downed his opponent 6-1, 6-4.
At second singles, the Indians pulled out a come-from-behind victory as they tallied another win to once again even up the score at 2-2 leaving the match in the hands of the teams' best players at first singles.
After capturing the first set 6-4, Bryan's Derek Vincent dropped the second set 3-6 to his Wauseon counterpart which left the match hinging on the outcome of the third set.
In the end, it was Vincent's day as he put away the third set for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory giving Bryan its first win over Wauseon in 4 years.
In JV action, Nolan Quigley won for Bryan.
