Results from Wrestling at Napoleon Duals
January 18, 2014Bryan High School
Bryan competed in the Gold Medal Duals at Napoleon over the weekend. As a team we finished 5th with a 4-5 record. Going 9-0 on the day was Brock Nagel. Brock finished the weekend with 7 falls for a combined total time of 4:58. Brock improved his record to 28-2 on the season. Brock has really wrestled well for us this season and is working to get better when it matters the most. Going 8-1 on the day were Braden Hahn @ 120, Austin Owens @ 126, and Gavin Saul at@182. Antonio Ramos and Bronson Beck went 7-2 over the weekend. Others receiving wins for us were Caleb Overmyer, Adam Herold, and Chance Taylor.
Overall, I thought we showed improvements. We are starting to get a couple of our guys back from injuries; however, we were still giving up several weight classes due to injuries at the same time. Coming into a tournament like this when it relies heavy on the team, our focus is not so much on the wins and losses as a team, but for our guys to win the head to head matches and control the things we can control. In our first two match we lost to Akron Ellet and Toledo Waite 34-33 and 42-41 respectively. If we could have had a couple matches go our way, or not give up pins and mistakes we would have won those two matches. In order for us to win matches as a team we must eliminate those little things. Out of our 5 losses, 3 were decided by a match. Our guys are continuing to get better, but we must strive to keep that mentality and not rest on moral victories or status quo.
A couple individuals that stick out besides Brock were, Braden Hahn has really done well for us as a freshman. He improved his record to 18-14 and is really wrestling with a lot of confidence. Austin Owens continues to shines as he went 8-1 on the day and improving his record to 23-8. Gavin Saul has had a solid season so far, if we can continue to get him to pick up the pace consistently he is going to have a nice finish to his junior season. Gavin is currently 27-8 on the season after finishing 8-1 this weekend. Finally, Antonio Ramos and Bronson Beck had nice weekends after being off the last two weeks due to injuries. Both went 7-2 on the weekend and improved their records to 17-11 for Antonio and 14-7 for Bronson.
We have a couple days off before we get back after it with the first round of the state duals at Toledo Central Catholic on Wednesday. We kick off the duals with a rematch with Napoleon. Napoleon beat us this weekend 60-15. Our guys are anxious for that rematch after taking one on the chin and hope to give a better performance on Wednesday. Wrestling starts at 5pm. We also finish the week at Delta on Thursday in a League Quad with them and Liberty Center. Wrestling for that quad begins at 6pm.
