Wrestling Update from Gorman Invite

January 7, 2014
Bryan High School

This weekend the Bryan varsity wrestling team traveled to Mansfield for the 52nd JC Gorman Invitational. As a team we finished 22nd out of the 28 team field with 48 pts. Winning the team title was Lexington with 227.50. This is our second year attending this tournament and once again it gave our guys an opportunity to see some different teams that we normally don't see, while also getting a chance to see some of the teams we will see come tournament time.

We are currently banged up right now and are not at our best; however, coming into the tournament we just wanted to show improvement and wrestle as hard as we can with the wrestlers we brought. Due to the injuries, we were only able to take 6 wrestlers with us, heading into the 2nd day we still had 4  of the 6 guys wrestling. Despite our small numbers I thought we wrestled extremely well in this traditionally tough tournament.
Placing for us this weekend were Brock Nagel 2nd at 170 and Gavin Saul 5th at 182.  Brock lost to undefeated Jesse Palser of Mansfield Senior 7-4. Despite the loss in the finals Brock had an excellent tournament. Leading up to the finals, Brock pinned his way to the finals. He has been wrestling really well for us. As the season continues we expect him to continue to get better and be ready for the tournament run.
As for Gavin, he has really been wrestling well for us as well. He is currently 15-5. In the finals, Gavin beat Cody Wright of Bay 3-1. Heading into the season we expected big things of Gavin, if he continues to wrestle the way he is capable of, we should have an excellent finish to his season.
Not placing, but winning was Austin Owens. Austin went 3-2 on the weekend and was one match away from placing. Austin had a great weekend and showed what he is capable of when he wrestling to expectation and with confidence. He is his own worst enemy at times and can cost himself some matches.
Overall, I was pleased with how we wrestled. We knew it would be tough to repeat our performance from last year when we were 2nd after the first day and finished 7th overall, but they guys did what they were asked and focused on what they could control. As a staff, we are confident we will be wrestling at our best when everyone is healthy and when it matters the most. For more results you can go to www.hswrestling.com and click on JC Gorman.

We have a quick turnaround as we wrestle at Evergreen for a league quad and then travel to Marion on Friday and Saturdayfor the Marion County Invite.
