McDonagh and Short Advance To Districts
October 3, 2013, Bryan -- The Bryan Girls Tennis Team had an excellent showing at Sectionals on Thursday. Overall the team went 7-3 on the day with 3 players advancing to the quarterfinals and beyond.
Doubles partners Megan Steel and Jessica Wittler advanced to the second round by defeating Woodward 6-1, 6-0. The Bryan duo then went on to face the overall #3 doubles seed from Wauseon before bowing out of the tournament.
In singles action, Kendra Wheeler won her first round match against Defiance before losing to the overall #1 seed from Maumee Valley Country Day. Mikayla Borland had a terrific run for the Lady Bears as she advanced all the way to the quarterfinals. En route to the quarterfinals, Borland defeated Rossford and the number one singles player from Toledo Christian before losing to Ottawa Hills in the district qualifying match.
Back on the doubles side of the bracket, Bryan's Tiffany Short and Linda McDonagh put in a strong showing as they qualified for districts making it all the way to the Sectional Semifinals. The Lady Bears tandem defeated Rossford, Woodward, and then upset the #4 seed from Napoleon to advance. McDonagh and Short will play Saturday against the #1 seed from Ottawa Hills as they play for a spot in the Sectional Finals and battle for district seeding.
Sectional semifinals and finals matches take place at Defiance College on Saturday with Districts taking place at Bowling Green State University next Wednesday.
