Lady Bears Break School Record
September 24, 2013, Toledo -- Since 1975, when the tennis program started at Bryan High School, no boys or girls tennis team had ever put together a 17 win season - until now. The Lady Bears shut out Toledo Christian 5-0 on Tuesday to give the 2013 Bryan Girls Team the new school record at 17-2. The previous record was held by the 1992 girls squad at 16-3. On the boys side, the best single-season record remains at 15-3 set in 1987.
The Lady Bears recorded their 10th shut-out of the season (also a new record) in their defeat of the Lady Eagles.
At the singles positions, Linda McDonagh scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory at first singles while at the number two spot, Tiffany Short put in a three set effort to win 2-6, 6-0, 6-0.
Getting her second start of the season at singles, Mikayla Borland battled for three sets as well before posting a 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 victory at third singles.
In the doubles matches, the Lady Bears went with their sectional lineup of Jessica Wittler and Megan Steel at the number one spot. The two seniors had no problem with the Lady Eagles as they scored a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
Making their varsity debut together at second doubles, Elizabeth Hoene and Elizabeth Huard gave the Lady Bears a preview of next season as the two sophomores took control early and blanked their opponent 6-0, 6-0 to complete the shut-out.
Bryan will look to extend their win streak on Thursday as they travel to Rossford.
