August 31, 2013, Lima -- The Bryan Girls Tennis Team came within 2 games of going undefeated for the month of August but fell short against perennial tennis powerhouse Lima Shawnee (256-29 record since joining the WBL 31 years ago).
The Lady Indians jumped to an early lead across the board taking the first sets at all positions except third singles. Shawnee closed out straight set matches against Bryan's first singles and first doubles team to take an early 2-0 lead.
After dropping the first set 6-1 at second doubles, Bryan's Kendra Wheeler and Trista Savage bounced back in the second set with a 6-1 win of their own. The Bryan duo went on to win the third set by the same score to give Bryan a three-set victory.
At third singles, Bryan's Megan Steel looked to be in command with a 6-1 first set win, but her opponent fought her way back into the match by picking up the second set 6-3. The third set went the limit before Steel reeled off two straight games to pick up the win at 7-5.
The second singles match was a slugfest with Shawnee winning the first set 6-4 before Bryan's Tiffany Short won the second set by the same score. But the Lady Indians go the best of the Lady Bears in the third set and secured the victory while handing Bryan its first defeat of the season.
Next match for the Lady Bears will be at state-ranked Ottawa Hills.
At JV, Elizabeth Huard and AJ Breneman were winners.
