Wrestling in our first tournament of the season; the Varsity Golden Bears took team Runner-Up honors at the Gibsonburg Relays finishing second behind Sandusky Perkins with 223.5 pts. Placing for the Golden Bears were: Champions Antonio Ramos 145, Shelden Struble @ 152, Wes Walter @ 160, Brock Nagel @ 170, and Justen Shepherd @ HWT. Taking Runner-up honors was Skyler Nagel @ 138, Austin Owens 3rd @ 126, Blayne Guise 5th @ 126, and Rian Green 4th @ 138. Finally, Craig Eickmeier finished 5th @ 113, wrestling in his first varsity tournament as a freshman.
As mentioned, we finished 2nd with 223.5 points, Gibsonburg is a traditionally D-3 tournament, however, there were several D2 and D1 teams as well. This tournament provided us with quality matches and allowed all of our wrestlers the opportunity to get mat time while also developing confidence. This tournament also provided each wrestler with 5 matches. To come into this tournament with only 10 guys with 3 of them as freshman says a lot about this team, despite being young we fought hard in all of our matches. Out of all of our wins all but 4 were won by fall. As a staff we are stressing the importance of finishing matches and when we have guys on their back, we need to get the pin and the extra team points.
It was also nice to see Austin Owens and Skyler Nagel have great weekends. Both are freshman are taking their bumps; however, they showed toughness and for them to place 3rd and 2nd respectively says a lot about how big of an asset they will be as they gain more experience. Brock Nagel and Justen shepherd had great weekends as well by winning their weight class. Finally, both Shelden and Wes had great weekends as well. As seniors they have an expectation to win. They got off to a great start and hope to build off of this as they work towards reaching their goals as well.
This is a great moment for our team; however, as a staff and team, we know this is just the beginning. We are not satisfied with the runner up finish and know we have plenty of work to do to get better. With the continued development in the practice room, we plan to get better each week and peak at the right time.
We open up league action next week at Wauseon in a league Quad with Evergreen and Delta as well.
