LINCROFT, NJ - Shawn Noel, Brookdale’s new Director of Athletics and Recreation introduced members of the men’s soccer and women’s tennis teams at the public meeting of the Board of Trustees on Thursday, December 13, to recognize their accomplishments this season.

Tennis player Farrah Smoke (

Wall, NJ), became Brookdale’s first-ever first-flight singles National champion this year and was named the ITA Scholar-Athlete of the year for the highest GPA of all National tournament competitors for maintaining a 4.0. She was also an NJCAA 1st Team All-American.  Women’s tennis headcoach Karen MacLaughlin, the 2011 ITA coach of the year and current vice president of the National Tennis Coaches Association, joined Smoke at the meeting.

For the first time in program history, Brookdale’s 2012 Region XIX champion men’s soccer team was one of five teams – of 20 that compete in the Region – to receive an added incentive toward the tournament seeding because of good sportsmanship.  Those points, along with a talented group of student-athletes and passionate coaches, paved the way for the championship campaign.

The sophomores player

s introduced last night included co-captains Justin Gregory (Wall, NJ) and Patrick Holliday (Howell, NJ).  Gregory, a 2012 second team All-American, first team All-Region and All-GSAC and Region XIX tournament defensive MVP also earned academic All-Garden State Athletic Conference honors last year while Holliday, was a mainstay in the backfield and an All-GSAC defender.

Sophomores Nick Bucciero (Howell, NJ), Thomas Vasquez (Belford, NJ), Bryan Lligui (Red Bank, NJ), Andy Caban (Red Bank, NJ) and Billy Tully (Hazlet, NJ) stepped up this year, and were proven leaders on and off the field.

Robby Fortune (Hazlet, NJ) and Tyler Gilson (Little Silver, NJ) both transfers to Brookdale from Monmouth University and James Madison University, respectively, but had no issue making an immediate impact.  Fortune was All-Region, All-GSAC and Region XIX tournament offensive MVP while Gilson made up the rest of an all-star defensive unit that earned 17 shutouts on the year.

The freshman players introduced last night includ

ed two decorated freshmen in Bradley Bennett (Lincroft, NJ) who earned first team All-Region and All-GSAC honors and was named to the National All-tournament team and Marco Fernandes (Manalapan, NJ) who was named to the All-Region and All-GSAC team.

The following were huge contributors in their college debuts, and will be returning to the squad last year:  Paul Garcia (Long Branch, NJ), Eric Lenneper (Manasquan, NJ), Keith Monaghan

(Red Bank, NJ), Dan O'Sullivan (Hazlet, NJ), and Anthony Rodrigues (Manalapan, NJ).

The sportsmanship and respect that was displayed and the disciplined demeanor of the 2012 team can a

ll be attributed to the leadership of Dave Janezic, Brookdale’s first-year head coach, and the glue for the team during the off-season was former Brookdalian and All-Region player and current assistant coach, Brad Fraley.

Members of the 2012 Region XIX championship team who were not able to attend the meeting included: Durim Fishta (Manalapan, NJ), Tyler Eltringham (Union Beach, NJ), Kyle Annecchino (Ocean Grove, NJ), Ryan Morris (Freehold, NJ), Andrew Lyon (Howell, NJ), Charly Garzon (Red Bank, NJ), Tyler Daly (Neptune, NJ), and Randy Stout (Howell, NJ).
