Please look at the Season Record for each team -- Bronx had seven or more losses than the other teams.
The rest of the stats for Bronx Community College matched well with all the championship team’s numbers.
How do we explain the difference in the season record?
Lesson Learned # 1 -- The numbers indicate that the Bronx team was an average team that had an average season. The teams that won championships had strong stats in areas that win close games.
When we look at raw numbers and where each team ranked among NJCAA Division III teams – it is reasonable to conclude that a low free throw percentage and a high turnovers numbers did not help Bronx win games. Both categories range from 2 to 10 percentage points --- that range, when turn into actual numbers in a match shows a difference of 2 to 10 points less for Bronx in each game.
The season average of point differential in the 13 losses the Bronx team had is 14.8 points. There were two losses for more than 30 points. There were two losses for less than 4 points. The team losses were within the range covered by the low free throw percentage and high turnovers.
The season record for Bronx can’t be explained by looking at the statistics alone.
Lesson Learned # 2 -- The challenge for Bronx students who decide to play in a basketball team in a high-level competitive sports is to believe (have a positive attitude), and practice the behavior that moves the collective group toward the similar goal at the same time during basketball games. Inconsistent team play does not win games.
Winning basketball teams have an identity as a collection of individuals who contribute to the success of the team. The team members have a set of personal values and behavior that matches the team goals for the season. There is no room for doubt, luck or negative attitude.
Teaching individuals to work hard in areas such as physical conditioning, learning the team basketball system, applying the system in games and to collaborate with other team members to reach a common goal is an extremely difficult task that takes time to be established – sometimes longer than one basketball season.
The next challenge for the Bronx Community College team is to advance an average team to a championship team.
