GXC Harvey Inv.: Chatard (38) nips Zionsville by one at Brebeuf

Indianapolis Chatard nailed down four Top 6 finishes Aug. 20 to outduel Zionsville by a single point for the title at the eight-team Harvey Invitational at Brebeuf.

The victorious Trojans finished 2-3-4-6-23-(25) to total 38 points, one less than the runner-up Eagles. Host Brebeuf (73) placed third, with Guerin Catholic (117) fourth, New Palestine (138) fifth, Indianapolis Ritter (166) sixth, Monroe Central (191) seventh, and Heritage Christian (193) eighth.

Brebeuf junior Hannah Lies came home first with a 19:25.5, some eight seconds better than Chatard senior Mary Davis (19:33.8). Senior Arden Burch (20:09.1) and junior Emily Lux (20:09.8) placed third and fourth, respectively, with Zionsville senior Randi Ulmer fifth at 20:24.5.

Jessica Banks, Megan Broecker, Lauren Munley, Courtney Sampson, Becca Uebele, and Marianna Kastberg-Leonard finished close behind their Top 5 teammate in taking the seventh through 12th positions in the 57-runner field.

“It always stings a bit to finish one point out of first, but, overall, we're pleased with our race today,” said Zionsville coach Doug Showley. “We're quite a ways ahead of where we were last year at this time, and we have every reason to believe the team's only going to make steady progress from here.

“All of our varsity runners are veterans – they know when to work together and when it's time to stretch it out and race to their own individual abilities. Both approaches worked well for them today.”
